She Is Brenda Expressive Arts and Music

Who: I am a certified expressive arts teacher receiving my certification from San Diego University of Integrative Studies in 2009. I am also a local artist concentrated in acrylic on canvas and mixed mediums, collage style.

What: Expressive arts is using the genres of drawing, painting, sculpture, writing, singing, instrument playing, and movement to express or bring out what you are feeling in the present moment. It goes deeper though. I don't believe that art was originally intended to just please the eye or ear, nor do I believe that art should be critiqued. I believe that we create art because we need to, almost as much as eating and sleeping. You will find that if you open yourself up with paintbrush or instrument in hand, you will create images, sounds, and feelings that conjure up old memories and issues needing to be brought out and into the light. Why? In order to look at them, feel them, process them, and then let them go if they are no longer useful to you.

This is not about talent or having a "gift". This is about discovering yourself to your fullest potential in an atmosphere of respect and most importantly, fun.

When: Every first and third Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Please check the calendar for monthly themes.

Where: 1772 Ebers Street,  San Diego, CA 92107 (Ocean Beach)

How Much and What to Bring:  Each two hours session is $15.00. If you have your own art supplies or instruments you may bring them, but I can provide them too.

Previous Classes

February's expressive art theme will be "commitment". A very scary word for some, but I think deserves some delving into. Please come visit my home on February 5 and/or February 19, 2011 and let me help you feel what commitment has and does mean to you and how it affects your life. Classes start at 1:00 p.m. and end at 3 p.m.

Webster's definion of commitment:

1. an act of commiting to a charge or trust as 1) consignment to a penal or mental institution 2) an act of referring a matter to a legislative committee

2. an agreement or pledge to do something in the future especially an engagement to assume a financial obligation at a future date

3. something pledged

4. the state or an instance of being obligated or emotionally impelled

Just bring yourself, comfortable clothing, and an open mind. Inspiration will do the rest.

March Theme -  Renewal

The Expressive Arts theme for March will be renewal. As winter ends and spring begins again, it can be a wonderful opportunity to renew ourselves. I would like to work with images that portray renewal both in acrylics, collage, and sculpture. Classes are March 5 and March 19 from 1-3 pm at my cottage studio. Classes are 15.00 per two hour session. Please call to confirm your seat.
